I use the same Jansport backpack that I've had since high school. I have a protective sleeve for my laptop and put it on before tossing it in with books and folders.

It has the standard padded laptop spot with a hidden side access zipper for the laptop so you don't have to open the bag up just to get the laptop.

Also has two nicely sized side pouches great for carrying power supplies, mice, etc. It's beyond bullet proof. I have to carry a PC laptop and my MBP when I travel for work and it handles that load without any complaints. The ballistic nylon is cool too. You can stab it with a ballpoint pen, pull the pen clear through the other side and rub your finger over the hole it left and it disappears as if nothing had ever happened.

It also has several interior puches that are good for things like VPN keyfobs, iPods, etc. and the three buckles keep it closed tight when you're on the move.

...and a key feature to me is it doesn't scream out "I'm carrying a laptop. Somebody mug me!" when I'm hoofing it around NYC on business trips.
