my beater has a few dents from getting rear ended and also accidentally opening the door on a pole.. and the paint chipped off so its down to the metal now. the metal is now rusting pretty bad and looks really ugly and i was hoping i could just cover it up w/ touch up paint or something so it wont look as bad?

is touch up paint what i should be using, or is there something else? i don't care too much about it blending smoothly, just dont want to see the rust. looking for a cheap solution.

found this site to order touch up paint, do i really need all that stuff (primer, clearcoat)? http://www.automotivetouchup.com/store/2oz_touch-up_paints/index.aspx

    thanks

Covering rust with touch up is like covering a hole in the ground with a bedsheet. Aside from completely removing the rust and sealing the bare area yourself- there are only more involved and more expensive solutions.

Using paint over the problem areas wont stop or even slow down growth, it will only get worse until it's fixed properly. That said, if your budget/level of care is super low and the car a POS- go ahead and paint over it just to hide it.

put some naval jelly on it...it will kill the rust, then clean and put the touchup paint on it.

but feathering out the area, (sanding) and painting is the fix....

I thought that once you have rust, it'll always come back even if you sand it down to bare metal & paint it.

Cut out that area and replace it. Only fool proof method.

not entirely true, rust is nothing more than oxidized steel.
