I am looking to buy a PC to last me a year. I am moving from Aus. to the US at that time, so I won't take it with me. I want to use it for browsing, uploading MiniDV data, iPod, copying DVDs. I need firewire and USB2.

My old system was 2.6Ghz, 512MB, DVD dual layer burner, 15" LCD. I gave this to my sister.

OK. So my specific questions are:

    1. New or used?

    2. Do I need 1GB+ of RAM, or will 512MB suffice?

    3. Is it worth spending the extra for, say, a 24" LCD compared to a 20" LCD?

I have been looking for a few weeks and getting totally confused. Your help is genuinely appreciated! :)

It sounds like you had a pretty nice system.

    2) 512MB is fine for XP unless you're into heavy gaming or video/photo editing.

    3) If you're not going to keep it more than a year, don't waste money on the 24". Its a big price jump from 20". Personally, I'd get a cheap 17".

Firewire/USB2.0 can be added to any PC with a card for maybe $30US.
