I've been having problems with rough idling and jerky acceleration in my 2000 Grand Am. I've replaced the fuel filter, the fuel pump, I had the entire fuel system cleaned, had the ignition coil replaced. Can anyone think of anything else that could be causing this problem? I'm fresh out of ideas :dunno:

Throttle Position Sensor? MAF sensor? Try scanning it; some stores will do it free.

    .

    Good point; basics first.

Also, has it sat parked for a while? Or, did you just fuel up before the problems began? Could be as simple as a bottle of fuel deicer.

I tried at advance auto parts but they said the check engine light has to be on, is it like that for anywhere else?

Well it's been doing it since I bought it. (I bought it real cheap). And it never sits around for more than like a day.

Not all problems will trigger a CEL.

Try unplugging the MAF. I've heard of them causing "no-code" driveability problems...

When were the spark plugs checked? Probably no the root cause, but it can't be helping if they're jacked up.

I had a problem similar to this.
When I get on the gas hard, the who truck starts jerking and hesitating.
    Doesn't do this anytime else.

i have no idea about pontiac, but im guessing one of these 3:

    3.1l
    3.4l
    3.8l

what do you mean by the acceleration is jerky?

does the car shake when trying to accelerate, or does it seem to lose power for a second, then work again?

i would change the plugs/wires first

I'm pretty sure its a GenIII 3400. I think they had stopped giving them the 3100 by then and I don't think they ever got the L36(3800)

How old are the plugs/wires? May be worth changing anyways since you've already replaced a whole bunch of stuff that didn't really need to be replaced.

Out of curiosity, has the lower intake manifold gasket been replaced? Oil isn't chocolate milk right? :noes:

But, you get what you pay for. Usually they scan it, then always say its the o2 sensor or somethin like that, even if its obvious its not.

if its a 3100, change the intake gaskets
not sure if they still had that problem in the 3400.

The second option, only it happens more rapidly and more frequently. And it's 2.4l.

So I should check the vaccum hoses and the spark plugs first?

Oh and I found out the engine coolant is leaking as well. Could a possible radiator leak be the cause of all this?

Yeah, the 3400 has the problem as well. It's either a 3400, or, I totally spaced it, the 2.4 Ecotec engine :noes:

If its leaking into the oil perhaps, just leaking on the ground....no.

if it seems to lose power for a second, then come back, thats a misfire.. probably doesnt happen enough for your knock sensors to pick it up

spark plug wires, and yes, same thing was happening to my friends rustang, i took a look at it and found a cracked/broken wire

    where/how is it leaking?

can you tell if it sprayed all over your engine?

coolant may have got into the plug boot and is causing you to get a random misfire

yup, if you have a 3.4, especially the FWD kind you are gonna change the intake gaskets sooner or later

i dont see how coolant leaking into the oil would cause a misfire, if anything it will just toast the bearings

it wouldn't, but if oil were leaking into the cylinder, then yea it would obviously. im leaning hard to the gaskets being bad.

Well it drips out near the oil drain pan and does it profusely when the engine is warmed up, but the leak stops when it cools down. It's possible that it sprayed since it only leaks when under high pressure.
