In a scene like that unless your gonna use a good bit of fill flash your going to have to clip a lot more of the highlights to get the gorilla exposed brighter.

If the gorilla is the only thing your wanting to capture in detail then pushing the exp comp up +1 or so would probably give you what you want. You can fix this in post, but you'll start to add a little noise to the image if it matters. And I hope you shot a RAW because the white balance looks off to me. Otherwise cool pics of gorillas. Where is this at? My zoo sucks for photography due to the amount of fences and glass.

you shot both in P mode,

    first shot 1/80
    second shot 1/30

Take it off P mode. If you have to use P, and you know the face is dark, pot it up +2/3 exp comp.

Makes it easier to correct when you turn off "certain" features.

practice with that or shoot in av mode if shutter speed isn't a problem. Only way you're going to lose the dark faces in lighting like that is with a fill flash

you might want to change the metering mode to center weighted. you sometimes get variations w/ multisegmented metering. and im not sure if you're able to manually control the metering in P mode. :o

How is this a problem with ISO?

It's the metering and the fact that the EV was set to -0.7. It has nothing to do with being in P mode, nothing to do with ISO, and nothing to do with shooting/not shooting in RAW.

OP...fix your EV settings to be 0, make sure you're metering the scene properly, and enjoy.

Or spot meter, and meter off his face. It should get you close to the right exposure, but like previously mentioned...you're highlights are going to be blown out.

Yes you can. Pattern, Average and Spot are all available no matter what mode you're in. It's the one aspect that isn't Auto.
