    At my computer...dumbass!
I call on the Computer God's of OT to help me figure out what the hell happened to my computer and which brother of mine I can kill!

This just started today, but everytime I boot up I get the following type of error:

"Cannot find a device file that maybe needed to run windows or a windows application."

"The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists."

    Then it ends with this:

    C:\windows\system\VMM32\IFSMGR.VXD
    Press any key to continue.

So I press enter and this pops up:

    C:\windows\system\VMM32.IOS.VXD
    Press any key to continue.

So I press enter again and I get this:

    C:\Program~1\EFFICI~1\ENTERN~1\BIN\NTSPPP3.VXD
    Press any key to continue.

So again I press enter and get the first C prompt answer above. I hit enter 2 more times and get the other two C prompt answers above. Finally it says:

Insufficent memory to initialize Windows. Quick one or more programs.....

    ARGGGGHHHH! :rant2:

I can't even boot up in Safe Mode!
What the hell can I do?
Please can someone tell me what I can do to resolve this problem or am I totally screwed?
By the way I'm running W98 second edition.

Thanks sooooooooo freaking much OT Gods!!!!!!!!!!! :bigthumb:

PS Sorry for the long post.

Get a good virus scanner, and norton utilities ...

Or reformat, which is my preferred solution. ;)

You might try this in the following order:

    virus scan->scan disk->copy missing files over->restore from backup->reformat

I'd run a scan disk on your hard drive as well to see if you have any bad sectors on it.

Otherwise try the virus scanners and see what comes up.

How do I run scan disk or a virus scan if I can't even boot up Windows?
Also, if I do reformat won't that erase everything on my hard drive?
Sorry for the dumb questions, but i have no idea how to go about this.
    thanks again!

i take no responsiblity for this, just some suggestions...

first, make a boot disk: go to a friend's comp who is running win98, put a floppy in, go to the run command and run "format a: /s" this will make a boot disk for you.

the vxds in the win\sys\vmm dir are small, and you do what other ppl said and copy them from your friend's win98 computer onto this same boot disk you just made. you might want to make two boot disks, since floppies blow and you don't want to have to keep going back and forth if one breaks.

go to your computer. put the disk in the drive and boot up. you should get to a dos prompt that says "a:".

    type in "copy ios.vxd c:\windows\system\vmm32" and "copy ifsmgr.vxd c:\windows\system\vmm32"

as for the other shit, it looks like you uninstalled some program incorrectly, but that shouldn't be a problem. to stop it from complaining, type this:

    set path=c:\windows\command
    c:
    cd \windows
    edit system.ini

now find the line where it's asking for C:\Program~1\EFFICI~1\ENTERN~1\BIN\NTSPPP3.VXD
    and delete it :big grin:

save, quit, take out boot disk, cross fingers and reboot.

If you want to try and run scan disk just hit F8 before what windows 98 splash screen comes up where it starts booting.

It'll give you a menu, just boot to command prompt and type scandisk. Should get you going on that.

For the virus scanner chances are you'll need to be in Windows to run it unless it's has a dos version of the executable.
