Looking mainly at either the Yugo heavy ball, Russian, or Bulgarian steel core ammo. Who here has tried what and how well did it perform?

I've got a mosin and honestly I just shoot whatever is cheapest for me to get.

I have got friends that have 91/30s that swear by different ammo makers, one is yugo and one is russian. So it seems to be like any other gun, you just got to see what works best with you and your gun.

I'm sure you know, but change the range rules where you plan to shoot it, some do not allow steel cored ammo (heck some don't allow anything at attracts a magnet.)

All the surplus I've shot has worked well. The only caliber I've found bad surplus rounds in was 8mm Mauser.

Thanks for the info. I don't shoot at a conventional range so the steel core will not really effect me.

I may get the spetzer tipped steel core russian just because it is steel core and may end up getting banned sooner or later. :dunno:

If any of you guys know where I can get some brass cased 54r with a <150 gr projectile please let me know. The only stuff I've seen brass these days is heavier and I hear that's not good for the action on my PSL.

The only thing you don't need to shoot through the PSL is heavy ball ammo. Good luck finding brass cased surplus light ball 54R

Albanian is fine brass cased light ball. It has neck splits but shoots fine in my Mosins.

Not sure if it's still around. I bought it back when it was >.10/round

Wolf actually used to (or maybe still do) make a round specifically for the PSL :o

As for mosin ammo: steel light ball is my vote, lacquer case if possible (atleast that's what my 91/30 likes the most. I'm saving my copper wash for if/when I get a PKM, since the mosin hates it).
