supplements are great for minor tweaks, but there is no "magic pill"

getting in shape won't happen overnight, it's gonna take a long ass time

    +1.

And a daily multi wouldn't hurt either.

    goals?
issues? (problem areas, slow recovery, excessive soreness, trouble gaining muscle, trouble losing fat, carb sensitivity, etc)

whats "basic" will really depend on your goals and needs/issues. When it comes to what might be beneficial (not necessary but helpful) the more info the better.

some basics that somewhat transcend individual variations and generally have signficant benefit

protein (though more a convenience than a necessity)
    creatine
    multi
fish oil (omega 3's are almost always lacking in most diets)

    must's IMO

Creatine, whey, Multi Vitamin and Fish Oil

I've also found beta-alanine & BCAA's to be pretty helpful too.

Not really supp's, but I find ephedrine, caffeine are good to have too
