I am going to plan to buy one in ~Feb

Budgeting like $1500-2000 (more than enough)

I don't really feel like building something, unless it leads to a higher quality rifle. i really don't know much about AR's and what goes into doing that :o

    suggestions? :noes:

for the cost, building one will get you a much better rifle than an off the shelf model :o

even if you use all the same parts, you will come out ahead on the deal (plus, its fun IMHO).

you want a short 16" carbine or a longer rifle?

    http://www.adcofirearms.com/

That'll give you an idea of the options and what you're looking at.

If you think you're eventually going to go with a free floating rail system
at some point, I'd just get it to begin with so you don't have to buy the
various tools to perform the install (vice block, wrench, etc)

make sure it has a barrel and possibly a trigger if you're into that

These are things that you need.
1/7 twist, 1/8 will do also.I see no need to settle for 1/9 anymore. You might as well be able to shoot the heavy 69/77gr match kings, 75 Gr hornadys.
Most good 1/7 twist barrels are chromed which is nice.
    flattop upper
16" barrel would be good to start out.14.5" if you want but I wouldn't do unless I was going to sbr it since I don't like permanently attached muzzle devices.
I feel that a good trigger is necessary, the gi trigger is lacking. You will be more accurate with a smooth light trigger if you want to be.
Aimpoints are nice I wouldn't do with out one.

If you're considering an aimpoint I would say you're probably going to fall into
    the carbine length.

You don't care about the tacticool shit now, but eventually BRD always wins
and you'll end up with a rail, pop up iron sights, light, etc.

I'd get the RRA entry carbine from Adco and have him swap in the daniel
defense rail, with a chrome lined barrel and NM 2 stage trigger. Throw your
aimpoint on it, rear ARMS #40L rear sight, and it's done.

the tacticool shit will just start appearing in boxes from UPS later.

Knowing how to operate, clean, maintain and shoot the rifle is most important.
