I plan on selling my old Dell laptop, and I want to clear out all my stuff. What is the best way to do it? just pics at it and hope I get everything, or delete everything and reinstall all the disks that came with teh computer when I got it.

I am not sure how to wpe everything, or if I have all the disks... Here is what I have...
    WinDVD disc
    Roxio easy CD creator
    Drivers, utilities, and applicarions
    Microsoft works & money
    Microsoft Office 2003

    Am I missing anything?

    Format and reinstall Windows.
And probably get another program to truely delete everything, as you can still recover data if you only format.

Pull the hard drive and sell the rest of the computer. Don't bother trying to clean it off, because either the buyer won't care about stealing your files, or else they'll be really skilled at it and even a reformat won't stop them. Just sell the computer without the hard drive.

There's no reason not to sell the computer complete if he's wiped the drive with something like dban.

Not if you shred the drives, and keep the remains, locked up in a drawer, like the government does. That outta stop them theives!

All I'm saying is that a simple reformat isn't going to stop someone who knows what they're doing. Hard drives are cheap, and almost anyone who's buying a new computer has one they can swap in. It's not like it's a new laptop the guy is selling; any old drive will do.

You use a program, and the data is gone. You cant recover shit that was overwritten 3 times.

Yes you can. That's why a DoD wipe overwrites data seven times. :slap:

And the DoD still locks the wiped hard drive in a drawer.
