Ive pretty much decided that i am going to put together some sort of .308 rifle.

Having a hard time deciding between an AR10 or Remington 700. Halp

What do you want to do with it?

In an ar platform there are better rounds than 308 imho.

    my vote goes to 700

    Welp.
The goal is to build a "Long distance shooter"
however i am leaning towards a bolt action rifle to build because ive already put together an AR type firearm and would like to try my hand at something different.

But everything is up in the air at this moment and i could be swayed in either or new directions

I'm a bolt gun guy. A handy/dandy AR10 to serve as a ball burper (if 308 surplus ever came back around for cheap) would be fun.

A bolt gun is going to give you more FPS as there is no semi auto action to bleed off velocity. It also going to much more felt recoil because there is no semi auto action to eat up recoil.

The semi auto is going to have much faster shot to shot recovery. You can definately get more lead downrange in a much shorter time span. Your also going to shoot way more ammo than a bolt gun or what ammo you have is not going to last as long depending on how you see it. I'm biased on shooting fast so I like the AR-10.

As far as caliber goes I don't think 308 is a bad choice. It does really well out to 600 yards which honestly is farther than most people shoot. It hits hard and makes a big enough hole, is resonably avaliable and inexpensive compared to larger calibers, and is a good round to learn long distance shooting. You can stick with 308 to learn to read wind and to dope for distance. Shoot the piss out of it as it has longer barrel life than say 243 and when you do burn out your barrel, rebarrel in something else.

Don't get me wrong personally I going to skip the 308 and go to 243 but I have other intentions for the rifle other than just improving long range shooting.

I plan on having both a AR-10 in 243 and a bolt gun in 243 something in the future unless I get nutty and decide to stardize on a wildcat round like 6xc, or 6mmAR

You ever seen anyone feed 243AI (or any of the AI stuff) out of the AR-10's? Wonder the requisite amount of voodoo required to make one feed?
