If you had to pick a weapon to arm a militia or small army, what would it be. Keep in mind, economy is an important issue here, as well ease of replacement parts, cost of ammunition, weight and reliability. I was thinking of maybe chinese ak-47's with high capacity mags. I am interested to hear what other recomendations people might have.

I wouold want something relatively decent but that I could buy in quantity without spending exorbitant amounts of cash.

I would strap about 15 Glockades to them.

    Serious answer:

M-14's and the 5.56 version of the Galil.

I'd say AK-47's of any variant. They're cheap, and stupid easy to maintain. They were designed to be cleaned in Diesel fuel, and lubed with used motor oil. Sounds just like the ticket for a cost effective gun.

AK's or AR's. both are all over the US, and both are easy to maintain and find parts for. and with AR's, in a militia setting, you could use parts from your enemies' rifles, or use their rifles and ammo to resupply your own forces. ak's are good because they're reliable, however, they're not likely to be used by any invading or domestic forces, nor is their ammo. their one good side is that they're all over the place in the US already, as are the ammo and parts. they're not nearly as accurate as an AR.

For economy, I would choose the SKS. You can buy them for under $150 everywhere.

Cheap, robust, reliable. Tons of aftermarket parts. The ammunition is readily available.

If you had even less money, but more troops, the Mosin Nagant would be a good chice. You can buy these for around $60. The ammo isn't as readily available, however.

I'd go with the Mini-14 because it's cheap (~$400), mechanically simple, widely available (you can pick them up at walmart), uses a round that's light, powerful (against human targets, at least), common, and cheap (<10¢ per cartridge), and magazines are widely available in 20-, 30-, 40-, and 90-round sizes (I generally pay $15 each at the gun shows for 30-rounders). It's very accurate and reliable, can be easily accessorized and customized, and lightweight. And we'd also use hunting rifles for sniper action.

I wouldn't go with the AR-15 because they're very expensive.

Hey, only what you see, pal!
