Im going to buy 2x1024 but im not sure what to get, here are the specs on my mobo:
    184 pin 2.5v dimm
200/266/333 mhz non ecc unbuffered ddr sdram
    single or double sided dimm

how do i know what to get as far as PC2100 or 2700 or 3200?

Also, can i get 1 1024 stick at a time and keep the 256 i have in until i can upgrade to another one?
    Thanks

what mobo and cpu do you have? that will tell you what speed you can get.

you cannot run dual channel (if your mobo supports it) while keeping the 256.

that system does *NOT* support 2x1024mb. The max is 2x512MB.

    Get PC-2700.

dunno, it's emachines -- I wouldn't trust it, or anything about it.

Try the 1GB sticks and if it works, cool.

okay, now to change course a lil bit, the only things left making it an emachine are the psu mobo and processor and of course ram
what are some good above mentioned parts that i could swap out so that i had a decent machine?

    get a sparkle psu.

For mobo, get one that goes with the cpu you choose. For a S478, get a D865GLCL or something similar. For S775, get a D915PCML or something similar. For AMD, it varies. I'd stick with MSI.

For ram, regardless of AMD or Intel, you need PC-3200. I recommend Corsair.

(the case still makes it an emachines, btw)

video card? I do light gaming, the order im working on this computer is
    new mobo/ram
    psu
    video card
    dual monitors

i already have an audigy 2 sound card

im mainly upgrading the mobo because i needed one w/ an agp slot as to allow for a vid card that would allow dual monitors but that will be down the road aways. Just looking to do the mobo/ram now. This christmas im getting a 200 gb hd so i basically need to do this the mobo/ram upgrade and ill have a basically new computer-minus psu and case.

forgive my ignorance, but is the mobo installation basically a plug and play or is there alot more involved, i basically remove my old one, take cpu out, put cpu in new board and put the board in and connect all the cables and cards and such?
