    Cross Browser compatibility is something pretty difficult to "master" when you're a complete newbie. That's something you learn overtime as you start getting familiar with a lot of the positioning elements offered in CSS.

    I would suggest start working with floats and staying away from the position element as much as you can. Create yourself some case studies with several different types of layouts and build them out using CSS. Often validate your code to make sure you're creating things correctly. Text styling and element overriding will come natural to you when you start playing around with positioning.

    i was mostly interested in what coding elements are most important for web2.0 looking pages.

    float
    clear
    difference between margin and padding
    background images, colors, positioning, repeats
    difference between a class and an ID
    cascading styles:
    .header{font:arial; color:#FFFFFF;}
    .header .bold{font-weight:bold;} (this line picks up the .header's font and color, etc.)
