what octane do you use in your car?

i noticed the manual for mine says 91, but 87 ok.

how do you decided to spend $.20+ for 91 over 87? does the octane make that much difference is casual/moderate driving? etc

I run 93 octane because I drive a turbo rotary, which are very frail when it comes to knock. Higher octane does not equal higher power (In most cases). Higher octane fuel is less prone to detonation (knock). If your car is knocking with 87, and but doesn't knock when you put 91 in it, it is beneficial to use the higher octane (longer engine life). The only way that higher octane can yield higher power is if the car knocks with low octane, and the ECU pulls the timing back because of the knock. In that situation, the higher octane would stop the knocking, and the ECU could advance the timing for more power. Also, running higher octane fuel allows you to run more boost, yielding more power.

Long story short, if your car doesn't knock with 87, run 87.

Ditto (turbo rotary and all), and to add to what he said too high an octane can even sometimes result in loss of power due to slower and incomplete burn.

I run 93 in my car. It requires 91 or higher. I know that if the car sees the lower octane or knock it pulls timming thus lowering the HP of the car.

    1997 Honda Prelude

My wifes I30 recommends 91 We tried 87 in it but there was no power and we got arround 40-50 LESS Miles per tank. My guess is that it pulls timming as well.
Just run what the factory reccommends and everything will be fine.

You can sometime here knocking, sounds like someone is throwing stones around in your engine bay..
The dyno operators usually have a microphone that they can listen for it with.

I like to run 100 octane in any of my cars when no using stock boost. Even C16 when getting serious.

You should really run the highest octance you can without needing to retune the car. It will get better gas mileage and make more power.

11.1:1 compression and nitrous makes 93 a necessity.

91 is the lowest we get here..
We get 98 from the gas station even..

Can get 100 octance from the station also but your not allowed to put it straight into the car. :)

Please realize that when you put an octane booster in your tank that says it raises octane by 1 point, that it means .1 octane. So if you put octane booster in 93 octane gas, it raises your octane to 93.1, not 94.
