This will be in Windows Vista. It's on a widescreen notebook, so something that can dock would be nice. Preferably with an auto-hide option. Must support AIM, MSN, IRC, etc.

I have not used a messaging product other than MS Office Comm in years... So help a brotha out. Back when I did use one, it was Trillian.

I use Trillian...which has a nifty auto-dock feature built in. If you drag it close to the sides of the screen, it will adhere to it. Should be what you need.

You also might try Pidgin, although I tried it out and didn't like it.

Meebo just released a Firefox add-on that allows you to dock it on the sidebar in Firefox...but seeing as how you despise Firefox, I doubt that would be the route you wanted to take.

I used to use Miranda IM http://www.miranda-im.com/

It's lightweight, and modular. Out of the box, I'm pretty sure it connects to most. It looks pretty blend out of the box though, but some people have pretty cool looking ones (from what I remember when I used it)

I beleive the auto-dock option is only available on the Pro version of Trillian... not the free version.

I currently use Pidgin at home and work... its nice and simple. Lacks some features i used to have in Trillian, but I don't need fancy things.

Here's a twist. Do any of these multi-network IM clients run on Windows CE or Pocket PC?

I bought Trillian pro for my work PC, and I am not really satisfied with how it works. Startup time is unreasonably slow, the interface is pretty kludgy (especially for searching log files), and it crashes when I try to use the spell checker. It wasn't terribly expensive but I wish I had tried some of the other programs before buying it.

They are developing a new generation of Trillian which will supposedly have a lot of cool new features, including cross-platform and mobile device versions. Maybe that one will solve all of my problems, if it ever gets released.

do they allow for any of the aim features like file transfer or in screen image sharing? Gaim sucked for file transfers. I could never get it working. I'll switch if someone has made this feature work like AIM.

I like Pidgin. I used to use Trillian until a prettier version of GAIM (Pidgin) came along so I switched.

    Speaking of multi-platform im progs...

Not so long ago, it was common for aol to try to disable these universal programs from working with aol.

    Has that changed any?

I don't like having to worry about whether the program is still going to work tomorrow.

So the only thing I've had running in recent times Skype for voip, which at least is stable from one day
to the next. Drag and drop file sharing is a plus, too.

I've used Trillian before, but they seem to have too many changes over time.
Which makes me wonder if the companies are doing what aol used to do.

I havent experienced any AOL blocking/dropping in all the years i've used non-AOL IM clients.

Oh, ok... maybe i was thinking of something else thats only Pro then.

they have been developing that app for as long as i can remember. Its been more than a few years. They have also stopped support of the current Trillian... at least the last time i checked.

Intriguing. Can't get it to run though. It says I need a better aygshell.dll. Gotta go get one from a Pocket PC, I guess...
