Instead of having to use your thumb to start the movement, and the wrist to flick the knife open, pusing the button does it all. You can hold your hand perfectly still, hit the button, and it will open up.

Why is it illegal? Because most states have adopted it as a dangerous/illegal weapon.

Like most weapons related laws, back in the 40's and 50's, "switchblades" or automatic knives got to be know in the movies as weapons that punks carried. So almost all the states passed laws saying any automatic spring loaded or gravity knives are illegal.

There are current options that skirt the law such as Kershaw's designs which require you to use your thumb instead of a button to start the blade opening then the spring takes over, but with a little practice, almost any decent folder with a thumb hole or thumb stud can be opened as fast or faster than an auto.

I prefer a thumb opening model to an automatic. With my Vapor II I can open it just as quickly and I don't have to worry about the mechanism breaking. Why spend the extra money?

I carry Kershaw Knives, but Benchmade Axis lockers are THE most securely locking knives made today. The Axis lock absolutely cannot fail without the blade itself failing.

As said above, don't buy the automatic. New designs are just as fast and who needs the cops hasseling you.
I just bought a Kershaw Onion and it is fast enough for me, $50 at Wally world.

I have a few auto-knives. In fact my GF carries a small one in her purse. In SC, they are illegal to carry, but you can own them for collecting and display purposes. Its the kind of thing, though, that you wont get in trouble for unless an officer is looking for stuff to write you up for.
