I have the 300D with the kit lens right now. What would be the best all around lens to get for an upgrade? I believe the kit lens is what, 18-55mm? I'd like to have a little more zoom capabilities.

The Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Zoom sounds like a good fit for you. You'll have some more zoom than the kit lens and the lens is ~$300. On the FM forums the lens got 9 out of 10 stars (Read the reviews here (link)). Every review about this lens has been very good. I plan on getting the tamron lens in a few months. According to Froogle (link) you can pick up the lens for $317 after rebate from a reputable camera store (According to Reseller Ratings (link))

thats actually one of its benefits, its not too confining in its application :dunno:

also you can get a fast lens that you can shoot at any natural light conditions with for relatively cheap (f1.8 goes for like 80 bucks fercrissakes) its also works well for portraits, especially with the digital camera crop factor :dunno:

I like the 50mm much more on my film body, infact, I haven't even used it on my digital. I wouldn't say its a 'must' for DSLR's, its a bit awkward. He'd be better off putting that money to the Tamron or something else that'd get more use.

Canon 28-135mm IS USM f/3.5-5.6, a little more at about $400 (I picked up a used one for $325) and I can promise you'll never want to take it off unless you want major zoom (I use a 70-300mm) or major wide angle (I'm told 10-22mm is great for this). The 1.6x crop factor eliminates most of the wide-angle, but it's still good for a WA/Zoom lens. The IS (Image stabilizer) feature lets you take better pictures in low light.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. I talked to a few people, they love the lens (and said it would be a good first lens for me) and it has great reviews on FM. I've been waiting for the past few weeks for websites to get it and on Friday, B&H got it back in stock (I was able to order one) and it was sold out about 2 hours after I bought it.

They just got it back in stock...do some research on the lens right now before it gets sold out.

I have a Tokina 24-200, and I like it very much. It's on the camera 80% of the time, it's that versatile. $300 bucks after rebate.

try not to rely so much on others to make your own decision. look what focal range you are looking for, read reviews, then make your own decision
