Do they tend to use a bunch of crappy servers? Or a couple of good ones?

I know digg uses something like 75 servers, but what kind are they?

It depends on their budget and their preference not all are a like. I assume most of the bigger ones use top of the line Sun servers but for all I know could be using p3 machines in the basement. No system is un-usuable if you were to put it to some use for multiple/clustering/load balance. Given with todays technology probably using mutli core processor's. Just to add there was a website that gave out that info but I'm not sure where it is off hand.

    Depends really.

Figure most use multiple webservers, multiple sql servers, a firewall, and some distributed backups at a minimum.

You're be surprised at the # of Dell Poweredges out there. Companies choose hardware based on their tech support and reliability record 9 times out of 10.

so if you got a site with the similar traffic as digg.com, what kind of server setup would you run and how much would it run you?

Both leasing and buying servers outright

When the site you visit becomes to slow to pull up on the web or the system load is just overwhelming (providing it is a issue with resources and not something else like hacked or dos attacks) its time to upgrade and span your resources across more then one system. After all two systems can handle more load then a single :wiggle:

Set a goal .. when cpu load is consistently greater than said goal, get a new server.

and what would that goal be? Managed hosting I guess 90% since they can upgrade you almost instantly. And collocation I guess 80%?

The servers for youtube must be ridiculous. Digg handles a ton of traffic, but it doesnt have any big files really.
