i'm planning a theater system for my room and will be assembling a HTPC. It will be connected to my LCD. (the HTPC will be connected through a receiver but that's not important here)

What kind of software or interface is best to play movies, songs, tv shows, etc. i need something that anyone can come into my room and select some type of media.

I want it to NOT look like any computer program, no itunes/winamp/foobar/etc... so i'm curious if there is anything even out there.

    ideas?

I use Windows Media Center with the mods to play MKV files. Works nicely for me.

Currently I use nothing special, just a Windows XP Home OS and then go through Windows Explorer to play files in WMP.

I am going to make an actual overlay after this semster ends. I haven't decided yet whether I am going to do it as a webpage wallpaper, use Desktop X, or learn/attempt to do it with Visual Studio.

Most likely I will try it with Desktop X and if that fails go to just a webpage wallpaper. Either way though, they will all load a playlist that will open WMP with the CCCP codec pack to play the files.

Mediaportal I believe plays MKV's. I used to use MediaPortal exclusively and then I upgraded my harddrive setup, moved a bunch of stuff around, and haven't had the time to set it back up to know where everything is at. Best thing is media portal is free and version 2.0 should be out fairly soon I believe.

Right now I use Media Player Classic with all the progress bars/title bars/menu bars removed so it is simply a box with video in it that I can fullscreen if I want but takes up minimal room if I run it with other stuff going on.

did you customize it through the included options or actually edit the program yourself?

I just went under the View menu and turned everything off. I love the clean look and just right click the video if I need to open up any menus.

I use a combo of Vista MCE and BeyondTV. I have a central BeyondTV server with tuners (2 OTA HD, 2 Analog cable) and 2.4 TB of drive space. I use their Link software to view recorded and live TV on the HTPCs (I have 2). It is by far the best software PVR available.

I use MCE to watch movies with Netflix (watch now), Vongo (Starz), and the MCE movie plugin to watch ISO'd DVDs from my collection. I also use it to watch formats that BeyondTV doesn't support. I wrote a small MCE plugin to switch between BeyondTV and MCE. Since BeyondTV can also work with the MCE remote it works pretty well.
