I just got a 700 SPS in .308. New .308 is costly. What is your opinion on shooting surplus stuff? I need a bit of consistency and accuracy in the ammo since I eventually want to shoot 300+ yards. But for now, itll be shot at the 100yd range.

    Thanks.

I can hold about 1.5 inch groups with SouthAfrican Surplus, I think it's SA. It's got purple primer sealer around the primer and bullet seat. At one point I was lucky enough to get a couple of battle packs of Portuguese surplus. Portuguese is supposed to be the best, and I was able to get about .75 in groups at 100 yds. As far as whether or not it'll hurt your rifle, it shouldn't. 7.62x51 is lower pressure than normal .308 so you should be good there.

btw this was all shot out of a Rem 700P LTR, 20in bbl.

Port is the best 308 surplus, get a reloading bench if you want accuracy.

Unless you're getting a pretty significant savings, I'd buy new since so much surplus stuff isn't reloadable.

as long as it is non-corrosive, I don't see a problem with, unless you are planning on reloading.

For a precision rifle, I shoot FGMM or Black Hills (Red). For something like an M14, FAL or AR10, I'd shoot surplus without a second thought.

So non-corrosive Port. .308 is cool.

I have no firsthand experience on this, but I hear tell that the '70s Indian is okay, but the later ('90s I think it was) stuff can have case head separations, case ruptures in the rifle, possibly kB's in some too.
Again, not something I'd know firsthand, just passing it along.

I shoot SA .308 out of my M1A and Rem 700 with no problems. Seems to be more accurate than I am.
