it is in chicago, they will even hassle you sometimes for just having an slr body.

and not even in the subway, i was taking a panoramic of the skyline from a pier, and one of my shots the camera was pointing towards the lifeguard station at the pier, and a lifeguard comes over and says "you aren't allowed to photograph us" and i laughed thinking he was kiddng but then he got all pissed. I guess you can't get pics of highly skilled lifeguards sitting on their asses. its top secret government type shit.

    Cool graphiti style light painting....

basically take a long exposure and walk around with a bright light in your hand and paint with your hand.

in the US, just stay away from bridges, subways, mass transit vehicles, life guards in short shorts, and officers of the law.

I don't understand, if you're in a public area then it's perfectly legal to take photos. What laws are they stating when they harass you?

    They can't - it's protected by the 1st amendment.
But that doesn't stop them from trying to stop you -- and when you ask them where it's breaking the law, they will get very vague and/or very violent.
It's only when they have a sign posted up that it's against the owner's wishes to have a camera there, that it's trespassing.

Just the ones they make up or pull out of their asses. But there is no reasoning with them, they have the shiny tin badge so they will try to fuck with you any way possible.

It's so bad in the NYC area that it isn't even fun for me to take my cameras out anymore. The past 5 times I've gone shooting I've gotten hassled by the cops.

    It fucking sucks.

Corrupt politicians bent on trimming a little fat off the constitution. :dunno: :wtc:

It pisses me off that they do this shit under the guise of "making a safer america" with shit like patriot act and whatnot. Al they are actually doing is taking our freedoms to make us more controllable.

    Fucking sucks.

Earlier this year...I grew up just outside the city, i'm there a few times a year - with work probably going to go way up.

I never use a tripod, ever. I walk up to people (sometimes police) and start to talk to them, then ask to photograph them.

Ah. That's the difference. You look like a guy on vacation where I often need to use a tripod or light stand (shooting cars) so there is almost NOWHERE left to shoot without getting hassled.

If you "look" like a commercial photographer, then the city requires that you get a permit at $150/location per day, plus insurance. Basically it boils down to the city council just wanting their vig from the people they think look like pros.

    Apparently, tripod = pro.

And they get people to swallow this shit by selling at a safety concern.

I guess looking too young to be a professional helps for the first time...everyone expects a white haired 50 year old.
