    I'm 5'11'' and weigh 188.

I don't exactly know my BF% but I know it's alot higher than I want it to be.

160+ while you're in motion should be sufficient

Really, that high? I was talking to a friend last night and he was saying that anything over ~126 shifts the body from burning fat into cardio exercise.

He recommened that for burning fat, I should shoot for 126 for 30-45 minutes on the treadmill. This is info he got from his personal trainer.

I have know idea so that's why I'm asking.

125-140. NO HIGHER. For the most part anything higher will not be efficient for you.

I'm sure it varies from person to person. But I use to do a real rough guesstimate of my pulse when I'd do cardio and I had no problem getting it up to 150-160.

I think I just found the answer to my question:

    Ideal heart rate = (220 - your age) * (.65)

For me it comes out to be 128.7, so I guess my boy was just about right.

How often during the week should I do cardio if I'm also at there to build muscle??

3x a week if you're trying to gain muscle. Or you could just not do it at all you're more likely to gain that muscle and strength you want.

At this point I'm more interested in leaning up. I'd like to lose like 10 pounds of fat.

I really wouldn't get caught up in the heart rate thing, to lose fat just eat under maintenance. Then do Cardio and Weightlift. I don't even do Cardio and I've lost a good amount of fat over the last 3 months just having my diet in check and lifting weights.

Hes right, eat right at 2000 calories everyday. Do cardio 3 - 5 times a week for 20 mins each time at about 130bpm, if you wanna count, and lift 4 days a week. You'll lean out REAL quick in just a few weeks.

Sustaining a lower HR will allow you to go longer but what matters is how many calories are expended during your workout. Going longer will shift your body into fat burning mode. But if you only have 30 minutes to do cardio, you'd burn a lot less calories slow jogging than you would running. You'd also burn more fat calories from running faster simply because you're burning a lot more of them even if it's at a lower ratio.

Sprinting with periods of rest/walking also burns about the same amount of cals as running non stop.

ugh, low heart rate is NOT ideal for so many reasons. So when in a low heart rate zone your body primarily uses fat for fuel.. who fucking cares? Your burning all of like 100 calories, say 80 of which are from fat. You just wasted an hour (or more) with virtually nothing to show for it. When you get into the moderate-high heart rate zones, your body is going to rely more on carbs than fat, but you are burning a fuckload more calories, not to mention EPOC, etc. Once you get into HIT realms, you start increasing VO2 Max, more EPOC, etc.

Lift heavy weights, do moderate cardio 2-3 times a week, get results. It's really very simple.
