which is the best model? dont tell me 2005 because its the newest
what was changed every year?
Competition Package became available in the 05's
2002 - SMG available, nav screen is widescreen
2002.5 - they had a problem with the engines blowing out. you need to do a rod bearing recall for this to fix the problem. bmw will warranty the engine to 100k miles when this is done. if you are buying an 03 or earlier make sure this has been done
2003 - face lifted trunk, LED taillights, strut brace on front towers
2004 - suspension adjusted to correct understeer, comp. package
2005 - shark fin
2006 - last year of production. no major changes from previous year
most of the stuff in 05 and 06 come standard that wasnt in the earlier year. a whole bunch of color options and trim was added/removed through production.
im going off memory, some of the items might be +/- 1 year.
if money isnt an issue i'd get a later model since it will have lower miles, be covered under warranty, etc. cosmetically you can put LED tails on an 01-02 and its really hard to tell them apart from an 06 (only someone crazy like me who jacked off to pictures of the e46 M3 for 3 years before buying one will be able to tell).
i bought an 02 with 32k miles on it for $30k. Compared to an 05/06 which you would have to get from the dealer at $45k +. not a bad deal. plus the prev owner of the car was a BMW tech who owned it for 2 years. just keep an eye out, as long as they were maintained properly, even the older ones are great buys. the M3 is built like a rock....its a very well built car.
get phoenix yellow metallic. some old guy that lives around where i live has one. we salute each other as we drive by but the color actually grew on me. it looks sick and definitely is a head turner.
i might go laguna blue dealer has one for $44k might test drive it in few days
