This is what I do, but some pop ups still remain....

    1) Run Spybot-Search and destroy
    2) Run virus scan from trend micro housecall.trendmicro.com
    3) Get a pop up blocker (whats the best one free?)

    What else can I do

    1) Run 2 *ware blockers, I reccomend Spybot and AdAware.
    2) Download AVG, free, dependable virus scan. And definantly a lot quicker than House call
    3) Switch to Mozilla FireFox instead of IE. FireFox can now do everything(and more, ie: tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking) that IE can with a little tweaking, and there is even an extension that allows you to put "Open this page in IE" in the right-clickmenu.

make sure it's the new adaware as they aren't updating the old one anymore, same with spybot search and destroy, version 1.3 and higher only. Also spybot has a nice immunize feature in it that blocks 19xx things automatically.

Also if you feel like it, Spysweeper is pretty good. Just get the trial version of it and that'll work fine.

Personally, I run Adaware, spybot, Spysweeper. For pop up blocking I use, Pop-Up Stopper. But I've heard good things about the google bar, plus it comes in handy having that google search option in your window.

    Take this equation into hand.
IE + Googlebar (pop-up blocking and Google search) - ActiveX Holes + Tabbed Browsting = FireFox (built-in google search, pop-up blocking, tabbed browsting)

Firefox has way more features than just popup blocking and tabbed browsing though. Easily-installable plugins are great too, just to name one.
