I will be going abroad this spring and then coming back to the U.S. on a 2 month trip through 4 continents. I have never had a digital camera, but have used several of them over the years for friends, etc. My parents are going to buy me a camera for Xmas and I am not sure what to get.

**I want to have a good zoom, good resolution, and the ability to store a shitload of pictures.**

What about this deal? Also, what else do I have to buy, like flashcards, a printer that is compatible, how much printing costs...

Or just discuss the best digital camera under 500 dollars.

There is no single 'best camera' for under $500. There's just too many good cameras for all different purposes.

let's say, for the starter (me) would it be a huge change in pic quality if instead of the A620 I go for the S2? Would I be able to take really great pics and learn how to properly use the S2? I don't want to go too low on price because I'd lose the capability of setting shutter speeds, ISO modes myself...I know the A510 takes great pics in auto mode but I want to play with manual settings and....cameras below $250 start to suck there.

What do I want? I want crisp pics during daylight conditions, being able to take somewhat long exposure night pics and play with different focus modes (like focused subject and blurry backgrounds...) I don't need movie capabilities and camera size is not a problem.

I'm one of those that believe that a good sized camera with a good zoom is better than those tiny cameras with huge mp numbers (like the SD ones with 7 mp, I fear those tiny Sony cameras that advertise 7mp but the image quality sucks!)

So far I'm between the A610, 620 and the S2...:hs:

I'll also buy a small tripod (so I can safely use long exposures) and the 1Gb card :wiggle:

And for traveling with a small P&S, I don't think a tripod would be best.
He's be better off buying The Pod from Adorama.

I've never used it, but I can see how it can be useful. And why people rave about it.

i just picked up a cannon sd550 +1gig memory card for 430, shipped from dell! Its normally a 500 dollar camera, and memory card is usually about 90..

Do a google search for dell coupon codes, there are a few sites like dealdetectives.com (i think thats it) and xpbargains, that show you how to stack the coupons to get a awesome price@!
