for basic recording and taking pics. My parents need a new camcorder that can preferrably do both. I have read many reviews and still am at a lost to which is best. I've come to the conclusion that its either between DVD digital camcorders or the ones that record onto memory sticks. Anyone have any recommendations? Preferrably under 1000 though. Thanks :)

mini DVD's are a pain in the ass. They're pretty expensive and unless you buy DVD-RW's, they're one time use. You also have to deal with finalizing the DVD's, and they can only be done in the camera.

Also, you will never get great pics out of a camcorder. They just aren't designed to do it.

My reccomendation: Buy a miniDV camcorder. Buy a camera. Go with Sony. Buy one that looks tough, and feels weighty. Once those fuckers break, they're expensive to repair.
