New to comics, I want to start off well.

What the heck is with the weird text that makes comics illegible, by the way?

    What weird text?

And it depends fully on what you want to read. Do you want superheros? Crime? Indie? Realistic? Fantasy? Etc.
Also recommend looking at the Recommendations thread. Might find something there.

Sandman if you want an entire series and aren't really sold on the whole superhero thing.

Green Lantern is good since the rebirth. It's all on warskrull, start with 01 and work your way up to 42...

Fables, Transmetropolitan, Sandman, DMZ, and Invisibles are all good reads. Really, anything by Vertigo is good on some level.

    Superhero series: Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, pre-BND Spider-Man, post-Rebirth Green Lantern, and Hush-onward Batman.

Y: The Last Man was fantastic but if I could recommend only one series to read it will always be Preacher, best graphic novel/comic series EVER.

I loved both, but I felt the ending for Y was so perfect that I would recommend that over Preacher.

I cannot recommend Preacher to anyone new to comics. The exact things that keep most people from reading comics (terrible stories, over the top dialogue, pulpy writing) are the hallmarks of Preacher.

:werd: Preacher had some serious flaws. It managed to be great despite them. YTLM, on the hand, had very little wrong with it. It was a masterpiece on every level.
