I shot a Springfield xdm the other day and it felt real comfortable.

    What would OT suggest though?

should I go new or is it a better idea to look on like guntrader for a used one?

I dont have a place to test shoot guns (range that rents) or anything. But I do place to shoot if I bring my own gun

I have always shot friends pistols, and I am a pretty good at it. So time to get more serious into it. I would like to have the option to get a concealed license once I get more experience under my belt.

Figured a 9mm would be cheap to shoot, my wife could shoot it easily as well (weak wrists)

Hopefully I will get good enough to do the small local monthly competitions....

Can I get some reasoning behind these choices?

I figured everyone would say a glock right off the bat because they have been around so long.

I also will probally not put any money on changing things around. I want an out of the box gun

Just buy a Glock or M&P, reason being they are the best polymer pistols on the market.

you really need to get your hands on some of the guns and shoot them

if you like the way a full frame gun feels better, try out a g17. hell, m&p's are nice.

i don't know any people that tried an xd before a glock and liked it more. it honestly isn't a big difference. look for features you'd use. some people like the thought of the external safeties on the xd's. some people like the simplicity of the glock system.

some people don't like either and would rather have a really comfortable gun. i know a couple guys that like sr9's. i held one and it did feel nice, but meh.

    you can't go wrong really.

    unless you get a hi-point.

Stick with the XD. Glocks are WMD's choice. IMO they're bulky and don't point very naturally. XD's trigger is > a Glocks also IMO.

I plan on picking up a XDm 3.8 9mm pretty soon.

This are my picks, with the addition of a SIG SP2022, for the reasons mentioned in the thread I made answering this very question: http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=1582007

You could also look at SIG P228 or P229 and HK P2000, P30, etc but that puts you well out of the best value for your dollar range without offering anything in the most important reliability and availability of parts areas.

I love my Glock, but I think XDs are nice guns too. If you like it go for it, they are well built and reliable. They may get a lot of hate because of their earlier problems, but guess what, so did just about every other manufacturer. M&Ps had problems feeding hollow points when they first came out. SA is good CS and also does nice, quick gunsmithing work if you ever decide to send it in for trigger or sight work.

Sounds like you're on the right track. 9mm is a great way to start, and competitions are a good way to improve your skills.

I have a 92fs vertec and love it. It's larger than the xdm but isn't cumbersome or bulky. shoots very well.
