every time I've been at a gay coffee shop or hangout there's ALWAYS been someone singing a line from "Rent" :hsugh: If I hear "Light my candle" one more time I'm gonna make someone into the next goatse :yum:

but in all seriousness, why is it that "rent" is so big with the gay community?

Lets see... It's visually exciting. It's musically delightful. It's gaudy. It's proud. And it recreates the dark terrors and youthful struggles of the early 1990’s, complete with multiple AIDS-related dramas (although they are made to seem about as deadly as after-school detentions). Oh, and since it's a Tony and Pulitzer award winning show, the queers luv it.

And unlike the many friends our community lost from AIDS, Angel makes a stunning comeback at the end of the show to wave and say goodbye... an opportunity that a lot of us missed out on. (And on a similar note, some of us wish we could perform a eulogy like James’ “I’ll Cover You”!!)

It's got strong, unabashed, free, proud, gay characters in it... not the normal tragic gay character (like in A Chorus Line) or the closeted gay character (like in Company).

whats that two thousand twenty three hundred song from that musical?! They butchered it at my high school graduation. I hate it when popular kids think they can sing and leave us hidden talents out of the picture

how do you measure a year in a life?

    how about love?
    how about love?
    how about love?
    measure in love...
    seasons of love...
    seasons of love...

    Plus... It's a musical, for Christ's Sake.
Musicals are the staple for the good homosexual.

I saw Rent on Broadway and have to say I was a little disappointed. I felt it lacked in storyline and was slow at times. The songs were entertaining but the dialogue was often dry and uninteresting.
