While playing BF1942 at times it will say "player so and so's ping of 301 exceeds the maximum of 225."

After awhile they get kicked from the server. What is a ping?

When you ping something on the internet, it means you send a packet to it and see how long it takes to get back to you (kind of like radar I guess). For example (on the Linux commandline):
    Code:
    [[email protected] adam]$ ping offtopic.com
    PING offtopic.com (38.113.132.7) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from 38.113.132.7: icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=98.6 ms
    64 bytes from 38.113.132.7: icmp_seq=2 ttl=47 time=98.8 ms
    64 bytes from 38.113.132.7: icmp_seq=3 ttl=47 time=97.5 ms
    64 bytes from 38.113.132.7: icmp_seq=4 ttl=47 time=101 ms
    64 bytes from 38.113.132.7: icmp_seq=5 ttl=47 time=98.7 ms
So what it probably means in that context is that the maximum ping time is 225 and it's taking 301 to ping that player's computer.

A ping is measure of time in milliseconds. From the time you send a small packet from your system to another plus the time it takes to come back.
    1 second = 1000 milliseconds

The lower the ping the better.

Some BF1942 servers, and other game servers as well, have a set limit as to what they will allow the max ping of a user to be. If you're on a server and for a good while the pings are under 100 and then someone joins that is 300+, everyone else's pings will raise some. So enough people join with high pings, then everyone else's pings will raise more which will start to lag the server and the of course the game play.

Ping is taken from submarine sonar, where they used it to judge distance and speed of other subs and surface ships. The single they would send would make a 'ping' sound as it the hit the hull of the sub

Ping (in the internet world) has come to stand for Packet InterNet Groper.

Also, technically it is a ICMP Echo Request...
