can anyone tell me from their experience what they would expect if a CPU was failed in a computer?
would the fans and shit start but no power to USB devices and the like?

wondering which is at issue in my builds - mobo or cpu, or psu...

    cheers

I've released the magic blue smoke from several CPUs in my time, and I suppose the fans/USB/other motherboard-powered items still worked. I've also fried a couple motherboards, and those things could still work (or not work) dependent on what actually burnt out on the motherboard.

The best way to know for sure is to make sure the case speaker is hooked up, and listen for the POST codes/beeps. That should let you know once and for all what is wrong (or not wrong - in which case you can deduce the source of the problem).

There's cheap ATX power supply testers for that as well.
