What happens if you don't eat enough protein?

    Suppose you train hard in the gym hoping to gain muscle, but you don't eat enough protein or food in general. Will your muscles still grow to their full potential without eating a lot of protein? I though protein was to just help you recover faster so you can train the same muscle again, but if you don't eat a lot, you're muscles will still grow to their full potential but it will take a longer time..

    like i notice my arms and pecs getting bigger even though i don't eat A LOT of protein. I do eat as much protein as i can from food, but i was just wondering not eating ENOUGH will not let my muscles grow to their potential

    Why undershoot it? Every person is going to be different, but why create an artificial wall by not eating enough protein?

    Well if you are training hard, your body will need more energy (calories). So I wouldn't really worry about lack of food; you will definitely be eating more; and if you aren't you wouldn't have the energy to actually work out.

    But to make sure you are getting enough protein, just buy some whey :dunno:

    You are what you can assimilate. If you are going to reduce your caloric intake or simply not eat as many calories as you should you will burn fat stores, and then move onto your muscles. You cannot expect to makes gains if you are not eating properly. It takes protein to make protein. Do you think people get yoked by eating rabbit food?

    Today I was going to post something similar, i've been in competition mode in jiujitsu this year and i've lost 10 pounds this month and I noticed a muscle loss..

    I was wondering had I been drinking a protien shake or some shit every day if I would have had more muscle right now (obviously yes im sure, but would I have lose less weight.. err)

    you dont want too much muscle mass if you're into martial arts. it only makes u slower and also, bigger muscles require more oxygen so you get gassed quicker. just FYI

    without enough protein you could die (extreme example)


    weight training tears up the muscle
    protein helps muscle (amongest other things) rebuild/recover

    without adequate protein your muscles won't grow and they might even shrink

    What do you eat ? How much of it ? Maybe you think you don't get enough but you could be getting close to 1g/lb which would be ok of you're getting enough calories.

    i think to be honest, inadequate calories is more of a problem than inadequate protein. If you eat normal meals, including meat, and drink some milk you should be getting ample protein for some gains, but if you're not eating enough calories to allow your body to gain weight, you won't really progress very much.

    Training is a specific science, some people can train for 5 years and not really look much different just because they don't eat right/enough.
