caliber doesnt matter too much as i dont mind.

im thinking Walther P22 might be the best bet. but im wondering if there is anything in a larger caliber.

What do you want out of the gun? Range gun only or self-defense?

CDNN has Ruger P-series pistols for $250-$300.

Glocks you can get off topglock.com for like $450s Not too much higher than your price limit.

For a range gun only, then a .22lr would be fine. Be sure to check out the P22, Ruger MKII/III/22.45 and Browning Buck Mark though.

I'm also going to recommend a CZ75 variant. For the money they're one of the best values out there for new handguns. I'd have a couple of CZ's by now if it weren't for their long trigger pull (and my short fingers)

P-89T was my first gun, my friend shot it and liked it so much he bought it from me, for starting out its great. Its just a little heavy for carry.

You should be able to get a XD9 for right at $400

Hell, why not a CZ52 if he has an ffl that he could send it to. cheap ammo, big bang, fun shooter, $150 pistol.

Id second the .22 pistol, fun and cheap to shoot.

Ive shot a small smith and wesson .22 pistol, and a Browning Buckmark. By far, the Buckmark has left a lasting impression on me. I want one bad now.

Are we talking new or used? I found some good deals on glocktalk for glock 17s for around 375 to 420 with extra mags.

You can buy used Sig 226's and 229's from CDNN for under $400.

Are they the Sig approved used ones or whatever they call them though?

Last I looked I thought they were Police turn ins. They're most probably beat to shit.

new and used are both fine. im no gun newb, but i know there are people out there with great knowledge than me. personally, i dont like glocks. the grip angle is too extreme for my liking.

Its not a like new finish, but being police guns they're mechanically sound and fired very little. My 226 from cdnn had some light pitting on the slide, but from my understanding most people get far better than that.

If I just wanted a range gun only, I'd get a .22 100 rounds of 9mm is $12, 550 rounds of .22 is like $9 I can go through probably 300 rounds an hour pretty easy if I'm just shooting and not fooling around. With 9mm I feel like I need to slow down more to stay economical. .22 handguns are cheaper usually too at least.

If you want it to be functional as a self defense gun too, then you've gotta move up to 9mm.

I agree I will never admit to knowing everything as well.

Hmm well I say go find a gun you like and see if you can find it used in a forum dedicated to that model. I like Glocks, I'll probably get another one in the fall.

+1. People don't Taurus for whatever reason. My Dad bought a 24/7 in .45 and has the compact 9mm for carry. We've never had any problems with them.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I was thinking more along the lines of price for a good pistol than all of that other stuff. If a person bought one, but didn't know anything about pistols then the firing pin would probably last about 2 minutes. ;)

I dont know if it has been mentioned, but you might look at some revolvers, you can find a pretty good selection under $400
