preferrably food that doesn't have to be prepared more than simply heating, ie peanut butter or chili. just add water food is fine too.

    thanks for any help!

hmm, i guess i should state why i'm asking. i do quite a bit of backpacking and my target calorie intake for overnight hikes is about 5000/day. i already have some type of menus worked together, but am always looking for ways to change it up, etc. while still keeping the weight to a minimum.

I read the first post... usually people include all necessary info there, otherwise they're asking for some sarcasm/judgement. Kiss my ass, jerkoff.

I'd stick to whole grains simply because they stay fresh for long. If you don't mind dirty food then bring some cookies and stuff just to raise your cal intake.

High-fat, high-sugar stuff. Trail mix, nuts; there are some pretty dense energy bars out there that are 400-500 calories a pop. Poptarts, for that matter. Fig newtons. Dried fruit.

    Olive oil @ 9kcal per 1g.
It's pure fat, it's the most calorie-dense thing around

Nuts aren't too bad either - most are around 600kcal per 100g

I bet you could pick up some rations from an army surplus store and keep a few of those. Once you strip out all of the extra crap (extra tabasco, etc) they're quite small, and you can get your 5k cals on those in a day.

Some bars made with oats, fruits, nuts, oil and honey. Any kind of bread with added fat (butter+jelly maybe, or olive oil/balsamic vinegar), pastries, weight gainers, get a jar of peanut butter or any kind of spread and use a spoon.

    cheese.

In my boy scouts training like 12 years ago they said if you're ever lost in the woods, you want to have a cheese wheel in your backpack because it is such high calorie [IMG]

i made protein bars with ~90g whey protein, 2 cups ground oats, ~20 tbsp natty pb, some milk, and some olive oil. Close to 4k cals in a very small volume. For your needs i would add more oil and maybe lose some of the milk.
