    I got tired of ZoneAlarm slowing down the computer, killing Firefox after a few hours, and then taking forever before my computer could shut off. Tried Comodo, wasn't too impressed. Tried Kerio, which has amazing features, but not what I want/need. I'm basically looking for the same interface and features as ZoneAlarm, like being able to block certain programs access to internet. Suggestions?

    If you use ZA Pro, expert rules can do this sort of thing. Google it.

    XP = no outbound protection
    Vista = the most basic kind where you set rules

    I use Comodo Firewall Pro on my Vista partition on my laptop, I use it around campus.

    On my Gaming Desktop and Server, I don't use anything but the firewall on my Asus WL-500G Premium v.2 w/ DD-WRT V24 sp1. No problems.

    I'm actually considering dumping ZoneAlarm on my Vista partition for one simple reason. It doesn't recognize all install programs in its program control. So if I try to run one of these programs it doesn't recognize, I can't tell it to allow connection and therefore they don't work.

    Just a router...

    I am not a bank or government agency, nor do I have trade secrets on my desktop, if anyone wants any of my files bad enough to target me and get them then they can have them.

    No offence, but that's a stupid philosophy.

    Would you use the same logic for your money, your privacy or your identity?

    We are not talking about my money, my privacy, or my identity. I do not do online banking or anything of the sort, I have only entered a credit card number into an online form once that I can I remember in my entire life, I highly doubt I have any personal identifiable material anywhere on my computer, I don't use my real name to do anything, including registering applications and windows usernames and whatnot, and I don't store personal documents on my harddrive only on encrypted flash drives.

    In additon to the fact that I am totally anal about what processes/services are running. I am fairly certain I would know if a keylogger or anything malicious had been installed. I mean I am a software engineer with a masters in computer science, if I hear harddrive activity when I don't expect it I usually go and check which thread was accessing it... yeah. Don't take that as arrogance, I know full well there are many people out there who would have no trouble accessing my system, I just doubt they will find it worth their time.

    nope, you just leave your personal information on the internet, where it's safer.
