Personally, I hate running, and it's always torture on my shins/knees. I don't mind biking so much, but I don't feel it's as good of a workout. I've moved more towards HIIT with intervals of 3-5 minutes to train for a full round of rolling/sparring but I really want to feel like my conditioning is holding up. Any tricks you guys use, or exercises you really like?

HIIT skipping is fun, or just regular old skipping is a hard enough workout. Swimming is a hard workout, and a good total body workout. Barbell complexes can be cardio oriented depending on how you do them. HIIT running up a big hill (should take you a minute to get to the top) is killer.

I've always wanted to try some of those "caveman" exercises that you see Sean Sherk and Brock Lesnar do in their respective All Access episodes.

My fav is get on a treadmill and start at 7mph for 5 min. At the end of 5 min go to 8mph. Repeat until you die.

Best I ever did was finish 12pmh then have a heart attack.

i would do good to make 9mph now :(

It depends. I will go through 3-5 rounds of doing 8-10 tire flips, 10 sledge hits with each side, a few tire or sled drags, but I usually have 3 different sized plyo boxes set up where I will jump on the lowest, back to the ground, to the 2nd highest, back to the ground and then back up to the highest as fast as possible and I will do that 5-8 times each round. If you are looking for the explosive part of plyos you should keep it under 10 seconds worth of jumping, if you are looking for the cardio aspects then you can go over 10 seconds.

After plyos, I will do jump rope for 30 seconds, pushups and dips, and sometimes dumbbell throws and curl presses if Im feeling saucy.

The great thing is that you can add or subtract many different exercises and it doesnt get too old.

Long cardio kettlebell workouts. I was dropping 5 lbs in 30 minutes when I was cutting weight. Under normal circumstances they are also great conditioning workouts for both cardio and strength depending on the workout variations.

Workout sets change every 3 weeks. This is one of our Wednesday sets. Wednesdays are 30 minutes and cardio focused. Saturdays are 60 minutes and more strength focused. I use a 35lb kb on Wed and just moved up to a 44lb kb on Sat.

    30 burpees
    15 swings right arm
    15 swings left arm
    15 seconds rest
REPEAT 10 SETS, yes that is 300 burpees and 300 swings.

Another one (on Wed - 30 min) from a while back is like this:

20 kettlebell swings right arm, 20 kettlebell swings left arm
20 kettlebell cleans (with swing between) right, then left
20 kettlebell clean and press (swing between) right, then left
20 kettlebell clean and squat (swing between) right, then left
    Rest 1 minute
    15 reps of each
    Rest 1 minute
    10 reps of each
    Rest 1 minute
    5 reps of each
    Then die.

I have been mixing my cardio with a weights work out for the next month. Goes as follows: Monday-chest, Tues-back, wed-legs, thurs-tri's, fri-biceps
So this is for my chest day, work in what ever you want for other muscle groups. Between each set I work in a ab set so there is never a resting period.
1.tredmill for 5mins at 6mph to get heart rate up and start sweating
    2. Incline bench 10 reps
    3. 50 crunches
    4. Incline bench 10 reps
    5. 25 oblique crunches on one side
    6. Incline bench 10 reps
    7. 25 oblique crunches on the other side

Now do the same thing with flat bench, dumbell flys, cable cross overs, push ups.
The weight does not go up for each 10 rep set. Just do the max weight you can do for 10 reps. Finish with a 10 min mile run. This workout takes almost a full hour and I am soaking with sweat when its all done.

If you have access to a Versa Climber get on it......That will give you a butt spanking in a hurry.....Timed swimming exercises will also help with cardio, but not much strength....

Mountain biking. I don't take my future in mt serious enough to do any crazy HIIT workouts every day. Mountain biking has improved my cardio a ton and is a lot of fun.
