I drove 4 hours roundtrip to go look at an immaculate 2001 540i 6 speed with M5 rims yesterday:

Asking price was $12,850...I got them to go $16,124.50 out the door with a 2 year / 24k mile extended warranty (AUL...almost bumper to bumper...even includes seals and gaskets) with $0 deductible.

I was pretty fucking sold on it because it was a dream to drive, has new brakes, new water pump, new radiator fan, and was in amazing condition for a car with 102k miles.

Three things are holding me back:

    1) CD changer doesn't work
    2) Lots of rock chips on the front bumper/hood from mostly highway miles
    3) This is the main one...when I asked for a copy of the VIN number (after a 45 minute test drive) the guy goes "oh just so you know it'll show unibody damage on the report"

I asked him if it had a salvage title because of that and he said no. Isn't unibody damage the same as frame damage and doesn't that salvage the title?

He claimed that they had 3 different mechanics look at it and no one found unibody damage.

He then claimed that the dealership they bought it from at auction titles all of their car with unibody damage so that they can't get in trouble

I drove the thing for 45 minutes through windy roads, highway speeds, and did some spirited driving and it felt fine.

You'll be OK, just have the auto shop pull the unibody the other way to straighten it out. The most you'll get tho' is your tires will be eaten improperly. Just rotate them more often.

Does not automatically salvage the title...only if the cost of repair exceeds ~75% of the value of the car.

Many passenger cars don't have frames anymore - they're uni-body constructed. So you can say it's got frame damage. Be afraid, be very afraid. Get more details on what happened and how recently. It may be nothing, but the car could turn into a rattler some miles down the road.

i wouldn't trust that shit unless you took it to a mechanic yourself. even then, I'd probably just avoid it and keep looking. not worth the possible hassle.

I just ran a Carfax report on it and there's no mention of unibody damage

There's no mention of any accidents either...shady.

How can you say you looked at a car in "immaculate" condition then say it has uni-body damage?

    I lol'ed.

But seriously, that's probably pretty close to what happened to said overly priced 100k miles car.

So you're willing to pay $16,000 for a car that in 24 months you will be S.O.L. with. You're really seriously considering this? :ugh:
