The reason I ask is that my dad is giving me his old Nikon D70 since im heading into the Coast Guard. Im really excited to get a nice DSLR camera and want to get some good glass for it. The 18-70mm seems like a good piece of glass for everyday use and for a wide range of subjects. What do you guys think?

Yeah I was looking at that one. I like the added benefits of VR, and the extra 130mm would be useful.

Thats what I was thinking. I wont be able to take a lot of stuff (eg. lenses ect) with me when I enlist, so I want to get a good mid-range lens that I can just leave on the camera. I might get a telephoto later on, but since I cant realistically bring a tripod onboard a cutter I dont think its really necessary.

He hasn't sent it yet, so Im not sure. He is upgrading to the D80, so I would imagine he is going to keep his glass, which is fine by me because its a ~$600 camera. So the money I was going to spend on a D60 is now being spent on a good lens. He may send it to me with the kit lens that came with the camera.

Nice, I was looking through that thread earlier. What Nikon do you have? I really like those shots.

Looking like im going to have to spend the extra $250 and spring for the 18-200. Goodbye monies :hsd:

Damn and I thought shooting video was expensive.

for a little more than that you can get the 18-200mm OS Sigma lens if they Nikkor VR is out of your range. Don't bother w/ that for that much money.
