Thinking of getting the 18"/26" combo so I can use it for home defense and clays.

  2. IIRC you unscrew the cap at the end of the mag tube, then grab the barrel and pull it out. Put the new barrel in and screw the cap back down.

    This.

  5. It would only be easier if the barrel changed itself.

As MG said, it's really easy. Look around on the forums for a used barrel, it's cheaper. A lot of guys buy the 26" then want to downsize to use it for home defense and sell off the longer barrel.

I picked up a barrel for clays for my 870 for $30. Guy bought the gun with the longer barrel because it's all they had, swapped it for an 18", and sold the longer one to me.

If thats the case I'd rather go with an 870 actually.

I got a really good price on that barrel, because he didn't need it. I got lucky.

The 870 or the 500 are good guns, depends on where you prefer the safety. 500 is mounted on the top of the reciever, near the back. 870 is a button mounted on the lower trigger guard. Both have a shitload of accessories available, so you can't really go wrong with either.

Go finger fuck each one and see which you like better.
