How close are you two normally?
Do you tell her your secrets? Does she know who your friends are? Your wishes? Interests? Does she criticize you for them?

The idea that there is some objective "normal" standard for a relationship, any relationship, is ridiculous. This does NOT exist.

Normal is relative. What's normal for one person may be smothering for another.

Trying to live up to other people's definition of normal is a sure fire way to be fuck yourself up emotionally, mentally and perhaps even physically. Just don't do it....figure out what you want from your relationships and have courage enough to ask for it.

Yeah, there's no such thing as a "normal" maternal relationship.

    Eh?
My mom and I were never really buddy-buddy close like some are. For several years after I moved out we were both busy with our respective lives and would get on the phone once every couple of weeks. We've become closer since I made her a grandma.

However, she's never been critical of my choices unless they were spectacularly bad (I had a few of those :mamoru: ). An "ideal" mother-daughter relationship would have the same basis that any relationship ideal would have - communication, trust, support, honesty, etc. The actual manifestations of those are subject to the parties involved.

That really is funny but only because I'm not having to deal with it.

my mom is my best friend. I can tell her anything, and she never judges or criticizes.
