Just the motherboard, and not top of the line processors, what does that cost now adays? I have no idea what I would get.

What kind of RAM is modern?

For dual quads, you'll probably need xeons and a dual socket 771 server board.

So how much is a decent dual socket 771 board and a couple non-top of the line Xeons?

tyan makes a couple boards in the $250 range and you could get xeons from about $240 to over a grand

Tyan mobo with PCI-Ex16 will set you back $300.

You can get some 2.0GHz quad-core Xeons for $229 each.

So just mobo and both cpus would set you back approx $750.

gotta factor in memory, server-grade chassis and psu... harddrives, etc. It adds up QUICK.

Plus, what are you gonna do with 8 heavy cores on a desktop anyway?

out of curiosity, why dual quads, if you don't need them to be top of the line?

He never mentioned he wanted a multi-monitor solution too.

Maybe he's going to index and remaster all of his porn too? :naughty:

Well, lets see. I run, simultaneously:

    MySQL
    Postgres
    Apache
    Lots of Perl, Catalyst
    Memcache
    Komodo
    FF3
    FF2

    and then my desktop stuff:

    iTunes
    Timer Program
    Mail.app
    Lot of shells
    Adium
    Excel
    Photoshop
    etc.

and I'm tired of doing it on a slow ass desktop, or notebook. I want to move the first list to a server. 8+ programs, 8+ cores. Latency kills me.

As to hard drives, I was going to go cheap on those.

you going to run Windows or Linux on this? can Windows desktop even properly take advantage of that many CPUs/cores?

Vista can. XP x64 can too, because it's based on the Windows Server 2003 kernel. I don't know if XP x86 can.

I don't run, or come into contact with Windows. I'm allergic. It will run Ubuntu.

Why would anyone run that list of software on Windows if they could run it on Linux?

Seems like you need to streamline your workflow.

Seriously, how many of those apps are actually using CPU time simultaneously? They can stay resident in memory forever and never use the CPU, if they're just sitting and waiting for your slow human ass to do something worth reacting to.

I often run them all simultaneously. My workflow is different than yours. I'm usually waiting for my PC, not the other way around. Its gotten to be a real problem. I could fork out like $3500 for a new MBP, or spend a grand on a server to do my server stuff.

Oh, so this isn't a desktop machine, it's a server? Okay, that makes more sense.

Btw, it's gonna be more than a grand by the time you're done buying all the parts.

I could pretty much use it as server AND desktop whenever my MBP pisses me off, but if its a server I imagine that would happen less often as it is usually apache/perl/SQL that kills my MBP. The worst are report exports to excel, where SQL + Perl + Apache + FF + Excel all go at the same time.

what kinda of pricing can you get from sun? their fiscal year ends today.

we can get a barebones x4150, 2 quad, 4g, no drives for about $1,400, probably less.
