Although I've never been bitten by it, I'm a bit paranoid of front-running when it comes to researching a good domain. What site do you use that seems safe?

register.com - over 4 years using it to check availability and never lost a domain to frontrunning even after a couple days to think about it. Of course I don't register them there because of their stupid prices but good to check for availability.

i usually just type in the domain in the address bar, most of the time you can tell if it's taken or not based on what comes up... if it errors out, then i check go daddy.

It's not cause im paranoid of having domains stolen, but im too lazy to fire up godaddy and search the domain.

I use whois from the shell unless I need a word-combiner, then I use Bust a Name.

If the domain owner sees traffic, he will know it's a worthy site.

A lot of times people buy domains and don't even DNS them.

That said, I usually use godaddy. If it's taken, I'll whois it to find expiration, and decide if I want to try to buy it after it expires or not.
