So, what's your opinion on the 7mm Rem Mag?
What are you planning on shooting?
I've owned a Savage 111 in 7mm Mag for about 3 years now. I mostly use it for White Tail hunting but plan on using it for some Elk/Moose/Bear/Mountian Goat hunting trips in the future. I know it's on the large side for white tail but I've taken 5 Bucks/Does with it around 150-300 yds and it hardly tears up any meat with a well placed shot.
My next rifle is going to be in 7mm mag. I like how flat it shoots and the versatility that can be had when you reload. (Not reloading yet since I don't have room). I like that I'll be able to keep lighter loads for Florida deer, but heavier loads for when I go up to South Carolina.
You are only the second person I've talked to that likes the 7mm round for deer. Everyone around here says "Thats a really big round, is there anything left after you shoot it?"
I just look at them like and walk away.
One of the main reasons I decided upon that round is because of how flat it shoots and the range.
I plan on going with either this stock
Along with a nice bipod and new optics
Some people can't get around the fact that there's other cartridges suitable for deer than .30-06 and .270 (out of a bolt gun anyways).
I like the look of the second stock, but I've never been too big a fan of thumbhole stocks.
Most people around here are stuck on those two rounds. I get tired of hearing about them and how "great" they are.
This sums it up pretty well:
I have a 7mmRM and like it though if I had to do it over I doubt I'd get it again.
When I go hunting with my dad he uses a Winchester Model 70 in 7mm and he swears by the cartridge. And yes there is quite a lot of deer left after he takes one down
I have an Interarms Mark X in 7mm mag that my father gave me. He's used it for deer in the past and prefers it over the .06 he kept. I haven't done anything with it except punch some paper, but it will hit 1.5 MOA or better at 100 if I do my part.
The Plaster stock is absolute dog shit on all accounts. I imagine you could do better nailing something together from treated lumber.
As far as the cartridge, nothing .284 sucks. Bullet selection is amazing, and it's the hottest thing going outside of .338+. Run the 120 X for game, and the 162 AMAX for shooting downrange.
That being said, I think the 7WSM is a better mousetrap.
