What Do You Think My Max Should Be on the Flat Bench?

I never really max out, but I'm curious. I've tried a few times lately, and I'm rather disappointed since I feel like my max should be a lot higher based on the sets I've been doing.

Lately, I've been doing 5 sets of 5 reps on the flat and it's really increased my strength. Currently, I do 5 sets of 5 reps, all at 300 lbs. Then afterwards, I'm capable of doing 335-345 for a bonus set of 2 reps.

FWIW, I've put up 355 before, but I think it should definitely be higher.

So based on that, what should my 1-rep max be?

365-375 maybe, but the only way to really know is to try :dunno:

For sure, and I will try. Maybe even today.

I was thinking 370 myself, but if I'm able to do 345 twice after doing 5 sets of 5 at 300, shouldn't it be more?

I would say around 355/360 or so.

It all depends though. I know a couple guys that will rep 250 5X but can only max at 275. In the sense, I have known guys that will max 300 but not be able to do 250 more than twice... it all depends.

I max at 415 and for a set of 5 will work 350 usually, so if you are doing sets of 5 with 300 and can get 345X2 I think 360 would be a good weight I guess...

Maxing on bench is HIGHLY overrated though. I used to and still dabble in competitive bench pressing and let me tell you, having all that weight over you somewhat regularly will really fuck with your wrists and shoulders. I am only 20 y/o and my wrists are already going down the crapper.

Lately I find myself never really working with more than 300 on bench. It is easy on the wrists, I can rep it out easily, and it just feels better. Maxing out on bench is cool at first, but it gets old and takes a toll on your body once you get up there in weight. I am focusing less on weight now, and more-so on perfect form and slow/steady reps.

But he's doing 5x5 at the weight, I'd imagine it's more 75-78% of his 1RM.

The only way to know is to try.
