Weekend vacation in Savannah, GA @ Inn at Ellis Square.

I didn't have much lighting or space to work with... this was really a sort of impromptu shot in a hotel before we went to dinner. It really makes me want to stop being so "impromptu" and actually take the time to better set up a shot.

Lighting info: Vivitar 285hv camera right, 1/4 power, through LumiQuest sbIII

I like the pearls, the cross-process look of the PP, and the coloring of the bed, but I hate the half-picture in the background and wish I had fixed the left pillow.

    Your likes and dislikes?

and just to throw in another shot from Savannah:

i wouldn't try to take out the impromptu strategy, but rather embrace the qualities of impromptu photography. it's about catching a fleeting moment, not about setting up a scene.

apart from that, i don't really know how to critique this image, other than that i'm don't feel that you're not emphasizing her portrait enough. i agree with you: the pattern on the bed, the picture on the wall behind, her catch my eye which wasn't your intention.

although the contrasting nature between the saturated colors of the picture and the bedspread, and the seemingly desaturated colors on her face and skin tone suggest some kind of overall tone of the scene. probably a stretch though, but could be played up to achieve some greater effect.

YES, there is a tone, but I wasn't able to achieve it completely. I didn't have enough room to use my 50 /1.8 for a shallower DOF....you're right, the portrait part isn't played up enough.

good call on capturing a fleeting moment.... she was feeling a bit mischievous but dressed really classy... & the outfit was sort of retro. I think the slight smirk on her face tells some of the story

    thanks

how do you feel about faking the dof in photoshop? in this case it probably wouldn't be too hard to select the background stuff and blur it up a bit...

im not sure if it's her or your wb, but her skin tone makes her look pasty and blotchy.

i like the color and tone of the first one. It reminds me of the pin-ups from the 60's and 70's, though you need a touch more fill from the left. There's a difference between catching a fleeting moment, and stopping to set up off-camera lighting. if you're setting up the shot, then set up the shot. if you're catching a fleeting moment, then catch the moment.

Thanks to those with helpful comments. Portraits/model/fashion photogging is very new to me - haven't developed a consistent eye for it yet. That's why I like to post a shot I'm uncomfortable with on here from time to time and get some honest criticism. How will I improve otherwise?

Like this? this was an absolute fleeting moment. she just got out of the shower and was super clean/fresh looking and was relaxed. she was like "ahhhh the cool air feel so nice after that hot shower" then I grabbed the camera... she flashed a quick smile and I got it

on-camera flash is bleh, but it worked out OK

That last one was the best of the lot, in my opinion.
