I'm just going by what I find.

I need something for home defense, and it looks like something that is (well) within my price range. the review I found (and posted) is pretty positive, too...

The cars might be death traps and toys filled with lead, but most modern chinese firearms aren't to bad.

    good point.

should I be a jerk, and ask my gun shop to order a Remington 870 express, or just go with what they've got in stock?

i'm sure they'll have some 870s in stock.

if not have him order what you want, nothing "jerk" like about that
i have my guy order me specific things all the time

Considering an 870 is all of like 30 dollars more than that and you KNOW they're good, I'd just buy the 870.

    buy once.

ok, well I didn't know if it was bad etiquette, or anything.
they had some 870s in stock, but they weren't the Express (which I want for the shorter barrel, which as I understand is better for home defense purposes)

I got one, and I like it better than an 870, its well constructed but it shot low out of the box, so i adjusted the the optical sights on it and it was golden, 6th one my FFL got had consistent FTE due to a broken spring, but he fixed it and it works like a dream.

If you're on a tight budget just buy a cheap used 870 at a pawn shop or used at a gun store.

Don't forget the used market. Many shotguns have been sitting in a closet only to be pulled out for a few rounds during duck season. Police trade-ins are also a good catch.

I picked up a lightly used 870 Wingmaster recently at a shop for $200. A nice gun without the cost cutting or limitations of the Express model (dimples in the mag tube to limit capacity...shameful :squint:). The 870 also has the advantage (along with the Mossberg 500) of having plentiful parts and mods available if you want to fix or change the setup. I'm completely new to the platform but when I was checking out shotguns, the 870 or the 500 were always at the top of the list.

Anything from Century makes me nervous as every FAL I've come across from them looked like a train wreck. I built one in my garage that was nicer and I barely know what I'm doing most of the time. I will admit I was rather nervous for that first test shot :noes:.
