yea I think the new ralliart might actually be cool for a change, and able to compete with the WRX.
I talked to a guy at a mitsu dealer, its basically detuned evo
but, he said it is only gonna be FWD apparently....which would be retarded in my mind and I probably wouldn't even consider one then.
    hopefully he's wrong!

I think the original story in the rumor mill was that it would be FWD with a turbo engine (so competing with the Mazdaspeed 3, SRT-4, etc.) At least, that was the first I heard about it.

But the official announcement from Mitsu is that the '09 Ralliart will be using the Evo's all-wheel-drive system. Also, the old Ralliart's place in the lineup will be filled by the '09 Lancer GTS, which will have a naturally aspirated 170hp engine available as an option.

So since it's AWD, how is this not an Evo X?

    It's a detuned Evo X, basically.

I wonder why this base Evo X still comes with the SST gearbox?

iunno, I think that the new sst gearbox will be nice if you have to drive in rush hour traffic a lot
...but yet again, there is something about having a clutch

Is the EVO X MR gonna come strictly with this SST gearbox? No 6-speed manual?

And this is a good idea for mitsu. They'll sell more cars, period. They could use the frickin money, when the rest of their product line has been straight garbage ever since the marque came out in this country

So what's even the point then? If you want a fast AWD sedan and you don't want a WRX, buy an Evo X. Why even bother with some special not-quite-as-good version?

Because it'll be like $5-7k cheaper, most likely.

Remember, the Lancer Evolution has not been competing with the standard WRX but with the WRX STi. Now Mitsu will have a car to compete with both.

    Oh.

Couldn't you just step lighter on the gas pedal, if you wanted to compete with a regular WRX?

it's like saying, why buy a regular vette when you can have the Z06? Or maybe more like saying, why buy a 5.7l GTO when you can have the 6.0l?

You save money. Buy the ralliart lancer and dump 3k in mods and have it be faster than the EVO :dunno:

Well...but the Z06 is developed from the less-powerful standard Corvette. In this case, they're downgrading something capable of more to start with. It just seems back-asswards to me.

Well it's not like they take a finished Evo X and put it on the assembly line and start taking shit OFF :mamoru:

(You might just as well ask who would buy a standard Porsche Cayman... the obvious answer: people who can't afford a Cayman S!)

Anyway, I'd imagine for Mitsubishi this is sort of like processor bin-sorting. Lets you recoup a little more of the R&D money by being able to offer a "lesser" product that more people can afford to buy.

I dunno, it just seems weird that they would introduce a new, lower-powered model after the higher-powered model. That's not the natural order of evolution.

(pun not intended, but definitely observed)

think of it like sometimes when all-new models come out, they bring you the top-level product so people get excited about it. Then when people get to the dealership and are like "wait, this thing costs HOW much?" they can hop in the lesser version which is still somewhat the same car.

Or Mitsu just didn't plan to have the ralliart compete with the WRX right off the bat and some men upstairs were like "that things GARBAGE, put the turbo motor in there you idiots" :dunno:

    wake and bake

They didn't plan to have the Ralliart compete with the WRX... look at the last-gen Ralliart. FWD with a 160hp big NA four banger. I don't think that car sold very well, though (notwithstanding the fact that I really like it). And the WRX is Subaru's biggest seller. 2+2=?

it'd be just one more car for people to consider when they say to themselves "What car can I drive to make me look the biggest tool"
