I have a 1938ish Western Field .22 (Mossberg made, basically a Mossberg 46 or 47 IIRC) with a really nice stock. I think it's walnut (back when they cared about these things). It's pretty dry...I was thinking about sanding it with really fine paper and then steel wool, cleaning with Murphy's Oil Soap, and then treating it with BLO.

Is that the least likely to change to stock color? The wood feels and appears "dry" and I want to feed it without changing it too much.

I also have a package from Southern Ohio Gun coming :noes:

    Think of it as furniture.
Remove the stock and foregrip and sand lightly.
Tung Oil to maintain a matte finish
Spar varnish to gain a slick, glossy finish.

This is hand-rubbed Fornbys (sp?). Maybe 20 applications. First gun I ever refinished. I just sold it to an Army sniper just back from Iraq

I thought it was pretty but it was too high-gloss. For the Western Field I like the grain of the old walnut to stand out.
