From what I understand it's an extremely safe car (does that still hold true?)
Now what about reliability? I currently own a VW Jetta and for fucks sake I'm amazed at how even at less than 100k miles everything that could go wrong with a car pretty much has. So what about Volvo? I am liking the look of this

But for that price I think I could do a lot better

I also like Volvo, but would I buy one..... no!
I live in Europe (where we have different expectations from our cars, so my opinion might not be valid in the US), but I was not impressed by the ride in the C30. It's a nice, alternative lifestyle vehicle, but expect no more than that. Everything else is pretty average incl. handling, safety etc.

Honestly they are not bad cars of pretty overlooked. Reliability long term is marginal. Not bad, not great, and varies model to model. They tend to last forever, but may require a fair amount of maintenance along the way. Certainly no worse than other euro makes. VWs are tricky...can be pretty bad, can go well. On average, a Volvo won't be better, just different. With VWs, a lot of dumb stuff tends to break, like interior trim, which is not usually the case in my experience with Volvo.

There are also some real deals to be had with used volvos such as the s/v60r

I got my Volvo S60R with 50k, I am close to 85k and so far the only things that have gone wrong were a faulty O2 sensor and Upper Engine Mount.

So the R is a cosmetic mod? Thats the problem with Volvo. I checked em out before I bought My IS350 and they didnt come close to the performance and handling and then again before I bought my GTI . The XC60 Looks shweet but theres none on the Island to check out and there military sales by far blows everyone else out of the water. The pending sale to China was also a big factor..

Amazing that cars that have turned around so well are being sold off.
